The skull base region, made up of multiple anatomical structures, is the bony shelf upon which the brain rests. The bones that make up the skull base include the roof of the orbits (eye sockets), the sphenoid and ethmoid bones, the clivus and petrous bone and the craniocervical junction (the point where the upper vertebra of the neck and spinal cord meet the brainstem). The skull base region includes the cranial bones that make up the floor of the skull and structures that immediately surround it including the: sinuses, nasopharynx, optic canal, pituitary gland, and cranial nerves and blood vessels that pass through openings in the skull base region.
Tumors in the skull base region have long been a surgical challenge to treat due to their location and proximity to vital structures including the spinal cord and brain, face, eyes, and ears. The Barrow Skull Base Center continues to be a leader in the development of new surgical techniques to gain access to these tumors with minimal post operative side effects.
The Barrow Skull Base Center's multidisciplinary team meets regularly to develop treatment plans, discuss outcomes, review research and develop cutting edge treatment techniques. Each patient seen at the Barrow receives an individualized treatment plan based on the tumor location, type and size and the patient's overall health.
